Chat and moderation
What viewers can do in chat, and the controls owners and moderators have.
Every channel has one chat. It is public to read and needs an account to write in.
For viewers
- Reply to a message: hover it and use the arrow. Replies show a preview of what they answer.
- @mention someone by typing
@username. They get a bell notification and the message is highlighted for them. - React with one of eight emoji. You can put up to five different ones on a message.
- Emotes: type
:name:for any emote the channel owner added. - Chat is limited to 300 characters, and to a few messages in a burst. Sending the same text twice in ten seconds is dropped.
- Anonymous mode: under the message box, "switch to anonymous". Viewers then see "Anonymous" and cannot @mention you by name. Your account is still recorded, and the channel's owner, moderators and the server admin can see who sent a message. Change it back any time; earlier messages keep how they were sent.
Guests can read everything, including polls, but cannot send, react or vote.
Pinned message and polls
The owner or a moderator can pin one message, which stays at the top of the chat. One poll can run at a time, with two to four options. You vote once, and the result updates live and stays visible after the poll closes.
Moderation
Owners and moderators hover a message and open the ⋯ menu:
- Delete message (authors can delete their own)
- Pin message
- Reveal who sent this, for an anonymous message. Every lookup is written to the log
- Time out 10 minutes
In Studio → Live the Chat moderation card has:
- Slow mode: off, 5 seconds or 30 seconds between a viewer's messages
- Followers only: only people who follow the channel can write
Studio → Moderators lists moderators, lets the owner add one from the channel's followers (only followers can be moderators) and shows active timeouts and bans with a Lift button. Moderators cannot ban the owner or another moderator; only the owner can act on a moderator.
Owners, moderators and the server admin are not held to slow mode, followers-only or the rate limit.
The moderation log
Deleting someone else's message, timeouts, bans, lifting them, pinning, polls and settings changes appear under Recent actions in the Studio. Reveals are logged too, but not listed there.
Notifications
A mention or a reply rings the bell of exactly the person involved, in either identity mode, and an anonymous sender stays "Anonymous" in it. See your settings under Settings → Notifications.
